Drinking with Toni Morrison
“…life was made just so the world would have a way to think about
itself, but it had gone awry with humans…” – from Jazz
What if life was made when Toni
Morrison said because flesh?
Bourbon’s the closest thing to honey
& today we bombed Iran. In the sky
right now the stars are strung up
like a gathering of hoplite soldiers,
lacking but strong. Shining in bronze
armor & wicker shields, each
neighbor answers a call to war.
What if I possessed the discipline
of a star or a soldier? To not drink.
Put down my sword. Become so much
more. Above us at night the chimera
and men fight for something that
was made just so we would have
a way to think about ourselves.
What if life was made so the world
would have something to heal?
Fell from the moon. Ate from
the tree. Monstrous creation.
