Sundial

Scratch, scratch of the sponge

on cast iron. Suds crackle,

softness hugs my neck, glimmers

at the periphery. My hands perform

in the sink’s deep

shadow-well, and light,

so much light,

falls on my lids. Should I

lift them now

I’d stare into the sun

this precise hour in March.

I don’t know if

I love its brilliant warmth

more than that it can be

so easily forgotten

it’s new again, new

each time I stand in it.
