Orange Rabbits Read facilitates the building of reading series by women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people in the south by providing them with the tools, resources, and experience needed to do so. Through this initiative, Carlie Hoffman of Small Orange Journal and Katie Rainey of Dead Rabbits provide aspiring writers and leaders with the guidance they need to create a thriving reading series and supportive literary community. Our reading series initiative creates an accessible, unpretentious, interactive, and celebratory environment to inspire and cultivate a lifelong love of reading, writing, and sharing of literature at all levels and styles in places that are searching for a stronger literary presence.
In 2018, having already partnered on a number of initiatives together, Carlie and Katie both found themselves separately offering guidance to women across the country on how to establish their own reading series, journals, and literary communities. Together, they decided a more official initiative could be created and established “Orange Rabbits Read,” a program that would combine the expertise of Katie’s reading series and community building knowledge and Carlie’s innovative online journal and women-centric focus to provide free mentoring opportunities for women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people to create their own reading series in areas outside of literary-centric places like New York City.
Since then, the project has mentored several people across the country, in places like Arkansas, North Carolina, and Georgia. The first artist salon to come to fruition from this project will occur in Summer 2019: Dead Rabbits Artist Salon: Little Rock.
